Types of laser pointer
The laser pointers usually use a deep red laser diode near
the 670/650 nanometer (nm) wavelength. Other colors are
possible too, with the 532 nm green laser being the most
common alternative. In the past few years, yellow-orange
laser pointers, at 593.5 nm, have been made available. In
September 2005, handheld blue laser pointers at 473 nm have
also become available.
The apparent brightness of a spot from a laser beam depends
not only on the optical power of the laser and the
reflectivity of the surface, but also on the color response
of the human eye. For the same optical power, the green
laser will seem brighter than other colors because the human
eye is most sensitive in the green area of spectrum (for low
light levels), with sensitivity decreasing as colors become
redder or bluer.
The output power of a laser pointer is measured in
milliwatts (mW). In Europe/UK the legal requirement is that
laser pointer output not exceed 1 mW; in USA this output is
limited to 5 mW for presentation lasers.
Applications
Laser pointers are often used in school and business
presentat ions
and visual demonstrations as an eye-catching pointing
device. Red laser pointers can be used in almost any indoor
or low-light situation where pointing out details by hand
may be inconvenient, such as in construction work or
interior decorating. Green laser pointers can be used for
similar purposes as well as outdoors in daylight or for
longer distances.
Laser pointers
can be used as toys for pets, especially for cats in play.
Some offer a selection of designs for the laser beam to
project (e.g. images of butterflies, mice, or flowers), to
provide variety. Opinions are divided on the safety of laser
pointers used in this way. Some consider laser pointers to
be a healthier alternative to the more traditional string
for cats because they reduce the risk of choking on the
string. Others are concerned that the laser beam may damage
pets' eyes, or that the pet will develop frustration
problems from not being able to catch the prey. [6]
Laser pointers do not function as laser sights, although
they may appear to be similar to sighting lasers at first
impression.
Green laser pointers can also be used for skygazing. On a
moonless night, a green laser pointer beam can often be
clearly seen, allowing someone to accurately point out
individual stars to others nearby.
Hazards
Laser pointers should never be directed into the eyes of a
person or animal or into any moving vehicle in which the
driver or pilot could be distracted. The output of laser
pointers is generally limited to 1 mW or 5 mW in order to
prevent accidental damage to the retina of human eyes.
PowerPoint Presentation Remote Control Laser pointer
(RC Laser Pointer)
Whether you are in sales or training or just need to provide
professional presentations, the PowerPoint Remote control
Presenter(which is also called rc laser pen, remote control
presenter, presentation pen, RC laser indicator, etc) will
give you an easy way to transition slides. RC Laser Pointer
is a USB device
that allows you to control computer-based
presentations (for example, PowerPoint) without having to
stand at the keyboard. It requires no software installation
- simply plug it into a USB port on a PC or Mac, and it
works within seconds. It has been successfully tested on
both PCs & Macs in shared teaching spaces. It is the perfect
tool if you are supporting your teaching with multimedia
presentations in the lecture theatre or eSeminar room.
Lecturers
already using this tool have found that it liberates them
from having to stand right next to the lectern or
presentation table. This tool will make it possible for you
to move around the teaching space, which will add variety
and interest to your presentation. Your audience will thank
you for it!

How Remote Controls (RC) work?
The Distinction between Infared and RF
> Infrared
Remote Controls
The dominant
remote-control technology in computer USB applications is
infrared (IR).
Infrared
light is also known as plain-old "heat." The basic premise
at work in an IR remote control is the use of light to carry
signals between a remote control(Laser pen, also is a signal
transmitter) and the device it's directing. Infrared light
is in the invisible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.
An IR remote control (the transmitter) sends out pulses of infrared
light that represent specific binary codes. These binary
codes correspond to commands, such as PageDown/Up and Blank
Screen. The IR receiver decodes the pulses of light into the
binary data (ones and zeroes) that the device's
microprocessor can understand. The microprocessor then
carries out the corresponding command to the computer by USB
port, the nest step is the computer process the command from
the receiver.
The basic parts involved in sending an IR signal include:
•Buttons
•Integrated circuit
•Button contacts
•Light-emitting diode (LED)
When the
infrared receiver of the RC laser pointer picks up the
signal from the transmitter (Laser pen) and verifies from
the address code that it's supposed to carry out this
command, it converts the light pulses back into the
electrical signal for e.g. 001 0010. It then passes this
signal to the microprocessor, which goes about "PageDown".
The "PageUp" command tells the microprocessor it can excute
PageDown.
Infrared remote controls work well enough to have stuck
around for many years, but they do have some limitations
related to the nature of infrared light. First, infrared
remotes have a range of only about 20 meters, and they
require line-of-sight. This means the infrared signal won't
transmit through walls or around corners -- you need an
angle scope between the straight line to the device you're
trying to control and the direction of of the infrared ray,
certainly, if your are in a room with good conditions of
infrared reflection, sometime, no angle required. Also, to
avoid interference caused by other sources of infrared
light, the infrared receiver of the RC laser pointer only
responds to a particular wavelength of infrared light,
usually a certain wave length, the light from an IR remote
control (laser pen) is typically modulated to a frequency
not present in sunlight, and the receiver only responds to
the certain wave length light modulated to that frequency.
While infrared remotes are the dominant technology in
computer USB applications.
> Radio
Frenquency Remote Controls
Radio-frequency
(RF) remote controls are very common. they're still pretty
rare in computer USB devices, but you will find RF remotes
controlling certain satellite-TV receivers and high-end
stereo systems. You'll also find Bluetooth-based remotes
that control laptops and smartphones.
Instead of sending out light signals, an RF remote transmits
radio waves that correspond to the binary command for the
button you're pushing. A radio singal receiver of the RF
laser pointer receives the signal and decodes it. The
problem with RF remotes is the sheer number of radio signals
flying through the air at any given time. Cell phones,
walkie-talkies, WiFi setups and cordless phones are all
transmitting radio signals at varying frequencies. RF
remotes address the interference issue by transmitting at
specific radio frequencies and by embedding digital address
codes in the radio signal. This lets the radio receiver on
the intended device know when to respond to the signal and
when to ignore it.
The greatest advantage to radio-frequency remotes is that
radio signals can go through walls, but meanwhile, the
signal of RF sometimes interfere with any other USB device
or be interfere by the radio signals from the computer or
any other device.
This benefit is why
you'll now find IR/RF remotes for computer USB components.
These remotes use RF-to-IR converters to extend the range of
an infrared remote
Optional Extra Functions of Remote
Control Laser Pointer
Almost all the
RC laser pointers cnould be added a U flash memory disk (U
stick) function in to the receiver, this function is
optional, people can choose this function or not. A rc laser
pointer with U flash disk function makes more convenient in
presentation.
How
to use RC Laser Pointer
If you use any
computer for multimedia presentations and the computer has a
USB port, the RC Laser Pointer will allow you to maximise
your impact by freeing you from the keyboard forever. Just
walk into your teaching space with a RC Laser Pointer in
your pocket, simply plug in the USB dongle (receiver) and
open you presentation file, now you are in action with
full remote control within the palm of one hand. You can add
impact to your presentations by using the built in laser
pointer to indicate and emphasise items on the screen.
